One of the most rewarding aspects of gardening is witnessing the miraculous growth of plants. My son and I embarked on our gardening journey last year, filled with hope and optimism. We decided to buy marketmore cucumber, pea, tomato, and onion seeds from our local hardware store, mindful of our Texas hardiness zone of 8a. With the arrival of April rains, our plants sprouted and flourished, a sight that filled us with a sense of wonder and anticipation—except for the onion, but maybe you’ll tell me what happened.
We would cover the seed trays every week and check on their growth. Gardening with my son also became a good time for us to bond. He would tell me things happening at school and ask questions about our plants. My son wanted to be the person who watered the plants, but this was April, and it usually rains in Texas.

We were thrilled to see our Marketmore cucumber seeds sprout and grow rapidly. The broad, green leaves and the little tendrils that wrapped around everything in their path were a delight to watch. Despite the occasional pest problem, the cucumbers flourished, providing us with a generous harvest. My son loved picking the fresh cucumbers, and we enjoyed them in salads and sandwiches. The tangy crunch of a homegrown cucumber is something everyone should experience.

TOMATOES
Tomatoes were the star of our garden. We planted several varieties, and they all thrived in the warm Texas sun. The bright yellow flowers gave way to small green tomatoes, which gradually turned red, orange, and even purple, depending on the variety. My son took pride in watering the tomato plants and watching the fruits grow bigger each day. We ended up with an abundance of tomatoes, which we used in salads, sauces, and even homemade salsa. There’s nothing like the taste of a sun-ripened tomato fresh from the garden.

Gardening has not only provided us with fresh produce but also strengthened our bond. We look forward to continuing this journey, learning from our mistakes, and celebrating our successes, one plant at a time.
